Background

Sophia has been an educator in the New Orleans public school system since 2007, but she has worked with at-risk youth in various capacities for nearly 15 years. Most of her experience in education has been based in alternative schools. Her experience working at Schwarz Alternative School, as well as The Net, were critical in shaping who she is as an educator and what she does now as a school leader of students with specialized needs. While her passion is working with, and advocating for, students with disabilities, she has worked in numerous capacities. She has served as a mentor to young ladies in the Juvenile Justice System in Delaware, Ohio, as well as an arts and crafts teacher to a group of young boys. She has also served as a big sister with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southeastern Louisiana. Sophia began her teaching career as a Secondary English and Reading Teacher. Over time, she has taught English, Reading, READ 180, and various elective courses.
